What built-in Mac dictation does well — and where it stops

The dictation built into macOS is genuinely good at what it was designed for: turning speech into text, on device, for free, with no setup. Understanding what it sets out to do — and what a dedicated rewrite layer adds on top — is the clearest way to decide whether you need anything more.

Every Mac already has dictation built in, and it is easy to forget how much it gives you for nothing. You turn it on in Keyboard settings, press a key, and speak, and text appears in whatever you're writing — no account, no install, no cost. For a great many people that is genuinely enough, and any honest look at dictation on a Mac should start by saying so. The interesting question isn't whether the built-in option is good; it's what it was designed to do, and what a separate rewrite layer adds on top of it. Once you can see that line clearly, you can tell whether you actually need anything beyond what's already on your machine.

What it's genuinely good at

The built-in option's strengths are real and worth naming plainly. It's free and it's already there, which means there is nothing to evaluate, install, or trust — the bar a third-party tool has to clear is "better than something you already have for zero effort." It's deeply integrated: it works in the text fields you already use, without a separate window. And for privacy it has a genuine advantage worth understanding — as Apple documents, for general text dictation such as composing messages and notes, you can check in Keyboard settings whether your voice input and transcripts are processed on your device rather than sent to Siri servers. On-device processing for that kind of dictation is a real, checkable property, not a marketing line. What it's designed to do: turn speech into text

The built-in feature is, at its core, a transcription tool: its job is to convert the sounds of your speech into the corresponding text, and modern versions handle punctuation and simple formatting as they go. That is a well-defined job and it does it. The thing to notice is where the job ends. A transcriber commits to text that mirrors what you said — including the way people actually talk, which is to say with restarts, filler, and sentences that wander before they land. Cleaning that spoken shape into written shape is left to you, at the keyboard, afterward. This isn't a flaw; it's the boundary of what a transcription feature sets out to do.

Where a rewrite layer picks up

What a dedicated AI-rewrite tool adds is a second stage after the transcription: a language model reads the raw transcript and rewrites it into finished prose — dropping the filler and the false starts, restructuring a rambling spoken sentence into a written one, and matching the tone to where the text is going, so the same spoken thought lands loose in a chat window and composed in an email. That rewrite pass is a different job from transcription, not a better version of the same one. It's the difference between text that records what you said and text that reads like what you meant to write. Whether you need it depends entirely on what you do after you dictate: if you routinely go back and tidy the transcript by hand, that tidying is exactly the work a rewrite layer is built to absorb.

Two other places the line shows up

Beyond the rewrite pass, two smaller differences tend to decide it in practice. The first is vocabulary: a general-purpose transcriber has no special knowledge of your colleagues' names, your product's codenames, or your team's jargon, so it renders them as whatever common words sound closest — every time. A tool that lets you teach it your own terms turns that repeated correction into a one-time setup. The second is language coverage: as Apple's documentation notes, which languages you can dictate in, and which of them support the additional Dictation features, varies by language and region — so how well the built-in option serves you can depend a lot on which languages you actually work in, and mixed-language speech in particular is worth testing rather than assuming.

How to decide, honestly

The right way to choose isn't to read a feature comparison; it's to run the built-in option the way you actually work for a few days and watch what you do next. If the text it produces is text you send, you're done — you already have what you need, and that's a good outcome, not a compromise. If you find yourself reliably going back to restructure the spoken shape into something sendable, to fix the same names and terms, or to compensate in a language it handles unevenly, then you've found the specific edge where a rewrite layer earns its place — and you've found it from your own habits, not from anyone's claims. That's the honest test, and it's the same test we'd want you to apply to us.
